Ministry – With Sympathy (1983)

На волне первого неоспоримого синглового успеха не заставил себя долго ждать и полновесный дебютный лонгплей, записанный при участии Ian Taylor [звукоинженер The Cars, Queen и Foreigner, продюсер Romeo Void] и Vince Ely из The Psychedelic Furs на Syncro Sound Studios в Бостоне, и вышедший в сентябре 83-го уже на другом – не менее авторитетном – американском лэйбле – "Arista" (дочерняя ветвь Sony Music Entertainment).

Альбом носил сентиментальное название With Sympathy (европейский вариант известен как Work for Love, с несколько изменённым порядком треклиста и новой обложкой), и – курьёз! – поначалу был забанен "Аристой" буквально как "слишком мрачный" ("Too dark") :D

The Ministry album is rock that's lyrically, as well as melodically and rhythmically, arresting. Built around Jourgensen's voice, guitar and keyboards, and George's "human drive machine" thump (synthesized drums don't have "the sweat and energy of a live drummer", Jourgensen stated), the sound is rich in texture, and danceable in the extreme. As Adam Sweating from Melody Maker put it, "Jourgensen, the chameleon of beat, redefines and rarifies many of pop's common properties: lust for the dance floor, a canny grasp of synths and where to put them, melodies which trip you up and then eat you alive"

Разъясняя специфику альбомного звучания, заранее парируя обвинения в чрезмерной слащавости и припопсованности материала на диске (а также явно читающейся мимикрии под британский Нью-Вэйв, даже с характерным островным акцентом), "Хамелеон бита" Эл Юргенсен как бы с интонацией оправдания говорит:

Nothing about our sound is sweet; I'm constantly jabbing at everything I can get my sticky hands on, so the vocals alone and the lyrical content will make something that isn't pop. We try to write catchy tunes that have a meaning, not just airhead pop songs. ...Yet the cynicism will be there – like sugar-coated poison, cyanide candy.

Пройдёт всего пара лет, и автор сам публично отречётся от своего детища, запустив в печать миф о якобы вынужденном, несвободном характере создания "With Sympathy", чуть ли не из-под палки: дескать, материал ему абсолютно чужд и нелюбим, и работа над ним велась под жёстким давлением со стороны лэйбла:

"Oh, yeah," – says Jourgensen. "That's what Ministry's Arista album was all about. Basically, it was like trying to write an album with a gun to your head. That whole album... I loathe it. Always did. Always will. It's not even my material, as far as I'm concerned. Sure, I wrote it, but...
"Well, I really shouldn't comment on it. But you'd come up with material, and they wouldn't like it, so you'd have to start from scratch again. I'll pretty much leave it at that".
